Story of Zakariya & Yahya (as) Lecture by Anwar Al-Awlaki & Shady Al-Suleiman

Al-Imran; In which Imran was a righteous man and the prophet. Allah SWT sent to bani Isra’il at that time Zakariya [AS]. He comes from the descendants of Dawud and Sulaiman [AS]. Zakariya was married to Ashya the sister of Maryam [AS]. Their mother; her name is Hanna. So Imran was married to Hanna. Imran and Hanna had two girls. One; her name is Ashya that was married to Zakariya [AS]. And another girl; her name was Maryam [AS] and of course there’s a big age gap between Ashya and Maryam.
Allah SWT mentions the story of Maryam, Zakariya, Yahya and Eesa [AS]. They’re all related story together.
One day the wife of Imran she made a pledge; she made an oath; a vow. “O Allah; I vowed to you what is in my womb” [Quran Chapter 3. Verse: 35].

She was pregnant is for Allah, specifically that means this child will serve in the Mashjid. Which Mashjid? Al-Mashjid Al-Aqsa. In that time, they used to have men. They were devoted to the serving of the Mashjid. They didn’t allow women to take this job. It was for men and they would live their entire life in the Mashjid and serve in the Mashjid. She wanted her child to go to the service in the Mashjid Al-Aqsa for the whole life. Free from all worldly work. When she delivered her child. She said: “O my Lord I have given birth to a female child” [Quran Chapter 3. Verse: 36]. And females were not traditionally allowed to serve in the Mashjid. Allah SWT says: “Allah knows best what you delivered and the male is not like the female”

This means that whatever male you would have delivered that male will not be better that the female that Allah SWT has given you. Because the female that Allah SWT has given you is the best of Al-Nisa Al-Aalamin [women of the world]. But Allah knows who this female is and this female is Maryam [AS]. So how do we go around here? So Imran; husband of Hanna and father of Maryam [AS]. He gives the ruling that as long we made the pledge. We must fulfil the pledge; regardless.

Allah SWT made Zakariya [AS] her guardianship and there Zakariya [AS] who is her brother in law. Zakariya [AS] is married to the sister of Maryam [AS]. So Zakariya [AS]; He was responsible of Maryam [AS] and he would take care of her and he would visit her from time to time. But he used to notice strange things.

He would come in to visit Maryam [AS] in her place of worship. Every time Zakariya [AS] used to come to visit Maryam [AS]. He used to see fruits but not any fruits, he used to see the fruits that come out in summer in winter.
Where do you get this fruits from? It’s something amazing here.
What was the response of sayyidatna Maryam [AS]?
She said: “This is from Allah” and the she told him: “Allah SWT gives the ones He want without any limits” [Quran Chapter 3. Verse: 37].

Allah will give you without any limits. When Zakariya [AS] saw this miracle happening to Maryam [AS]. He himself desired something from Allah. Zakariya (AS) at the time was old. His hair was grey and his wife was barren, plus she was old.

Zakariya [AS] being the Nabi. He was the one responsible for the religious affairs of bani Isra’il. Sayyidina Zakariya [AS] when he became old. He was worried. That there is no one qualified to take over after him. Therefore, he wanted to have a child. That would be strong and capable to lead bani Isra’il and to teach and them to bring them back to the straight path. At that time Zakariya [AS] invoked his Lord saying: “O my Lord; Grant me from you good offspring; You are indeed the all hearer of invocation” [Quran Chapter 3. Verse: 38]. Immediately the dua was accepted.
Allah SWT says: “The angels called him;” [Quran Chapter 3. Verse: 39]. when did they call him?
“When he was standing and praying in Al-Mihrab”. Al-Mihrab is the place of worship. There Allah SWT calls Zakariya [AS] and he says: “Ya Zakariya; We give you the good news of a child. The name of that child was Yahya. No one knew that name Yahya before” [Quran Chapter 3. Verse: 39]. So that the first child that was named Yahya in history was the son of Zakariya [AS] and Allah is the one that named him Yahya. “Noble; keeping away from sexual relations with women. A prophet from among the righteous” [Quran Chapter 3. Verse: 39]. These are some of the attributes of Yahya [AS]. Zakariya [AS] when he received this astonishing news, He asked the question. He said: “How can I have a son when I am very old and my wife is barren” [Quran Chapter 3. Verse: 40]. So Allah SWT He says: “This is what Allah does; He does whatever He wills”Sayyidina Zakariya [AS] wanted a sign from Allah SWT that will indicate to him that his wife is pregnant. Allah SWT says: “Your sign is that you shall not speak to mankind for three days except with signals” [Quran Chapter 3. Verse: 41]

So he speaks fine and then suddenly for three days he lost the ability to speak and he was only able to make dhikr of Allah SWT. So how can he communicate with people?

He communicates with them by signs. And Allah SWT told him: “During these three days remember your Lord much and glorify him in the afternoon and in the morning” [Quran Chapter 3. Verse: 41]

He still was giving the people orders using signs. That they should make dhikr to Allah SWT.
Yahya [AS] grew up and three months after the birth of Yahya [AS], it was birth of Eesa [AS]. Yahya [AS] is young and he is going to be the Nabi of bani Isra’il. Bani Isra’il who have went corrupt and went astray and this young man will be responsible for this ummah [for the nation]. Therefore, he must have that strength and confidence and power. Otherwise he would not be able to function and he would be swept away by the ocean of corruption. That was existing in the time.
Allah says: “O Yahya; Hold fast the scripture;” [Quran Chapter: 19. Verse: 12]. To all of the commands of Allah SWT and you don’t let go of them; so you never give up and you never buckle down. You’re always holding fast; holding strong to the commands of Allah.
“We have given him the [judgement and the understanding and the wishdom] when he was young” [Quran Chapter: 19. Verse: 12].
All of the anbiya of Allah were sympathetic but sayyidina Yahya [AS] was a strong attribute of him and he was pure. He was righteous and dutiful towards his parents. He was neither arrogant not disobedient” [Quran Chapter: 19. Verse: 13, 14].

People respected Yahya [AS] at that time and Zakariya [AS] was the father of Yahya [AS]. So there were the two main leaders and two main prophets and messengers including Eesa [AS]. In which people used to look up to and respect.

Allah SWT commanded Yahya [AS] bin Zakariya with five commandments to perform in his self and to command bani Isra’il to perform. So he received the five commandments from Allah and he didn’t hasten in conveying them. Allah SWT revealed to sayyidina Eesa [AS] that He either conveys them or you convey them. So sayyidina Eesa [AS] went to sayyidina Yahya [AS].
“Allah SWT given you five commandments; you either convey them or I’ll [Isa (as)] convey them myself”. Sayyidina Yahya [AS] said: “O sprit of Allah (it means that the ruh of Eesa [AS] was created by Allah SWT. Doesn’t mean he is the actual spirit of Allah.) I am afraid that if you convey them, I’ll be punished or the earth would swallow me”. Yahya gathered the children of Israel to Jerusalem until the Mashjid was full. Yahya [AS] sat on a high place to speak to them. So he praised Allah and he thanked him and he said: “Allah has commanded me five things to perform myself and you should perform.”
He said: Number one: “You worship Allah and you associate no Gods Beside Him. And the analogy of someone who’s worshiping a God besides Allah is like one of you who bought a slave and you payed for that with your money in gold or silver and then you told that slave to work for you. So the slave would go and work instead of giving you harvest he would go and give it someone else”.
Sayyidina Yahya [AS] said: “Who would accept that?”
Then he said: “Allah SWT is the one who created you and The one who is giving you; so you should worship no one but Him.”

Number two: “I command you to pray and when you stand to pray; don’t turn your face around because Allah SWT is facing you and as long as you’re facing Him; Allah will face you and as soon as you turn your face away. Allah will turn his face away from you”.

Number three: “I command you to fast and the analogy of that is like someone walking with a sack of musk and everyone is able to smell it. The smell of the mouth of the person who’s fasting is better in the eyes of Allah SWT than the smell of musk”.

Number four: “I command you to give sadaqah [charity]. The analogy of that is like a man who is captured by the enemy and they tired his hands to his neck. He is hopeless and they forwarded him to execution. So this man during what he’s going towards death. He is bargaining with them to release him and he’s trying to ransom himself with money until they release him. By giving sadaqah and continuosly giving sadaqah [charity] we are ransoming our self from hellfire. We might be in a hopeless case; hands tied to the neck. Give sadaqah throughout the way until you die. Sadaqah it is the way to free oneself from hellfire”.

Number five: “I command you to remember Allah, Make dhikr. And the analogy of that is like a man who’s pursued by enemy so he finds a very protective fortress. So he goes in it and he protects himself and you’re in the safest place from shaytan when you are remembering the name of Allah”.
At that time there was a tyrant ruler from bani isra’il. And that leader; that king he fell in love with his niece. His niece was an evil woman and they say she was also a prostitute. When the king fell in love with her. She became also eager to become the queen. But how is she going to get married to him? When it’s haram in their religion. So she sent for a fatwa to Yahya [AS] asking him “is it permissible for her to get married to her uncle?”. So obviously Yahya [AS] said: “No; Haram.”
Some narrations say that fatwa was also sent to Zakariya [AS] and he said also “It’s haram”. The narrations say: That one night she was with her uncle and she started to play on her uncle which is the king. She tried to attract him. When he came near her she said: “No; it’s haram”. because Yahya says: “no; it’s haram”.
She said: “I will not let you go near me until you get me the head of Yahya as my dowry”.

So the king with the hyped up desire and arrogance and pride he sent his troops out to Yahya [AS] and they went behind Yahya [AS]. They killed Yahya [AS] and chopped his head off and brought the head of Yahya [AS] on a golden plate to the niece of the king as a dowry.

They also; the soldiers of the king were sent behind Zakariya [AS] to kill him and Allah SWT saved Zakariya [AS] in which a tree opened up for Zakariya [AS] when he was running in the jungle. He hid in that tree but Iblis [la] [as some of the narrations that some of the scholars says it’s even weak] grabbed the side of his cloth and left it out in the open. That when the soldiers came. Iblis came in the form of a human being and said: “Can’t you see the garment? Get a saw and cut this tree open”.

That’s when they killed Zakariya [AS]. So Zakariya [AS] and Yahya [AS] were killed for the most evilness. For a niece that’s wanting to get married to her uncle for the sake of desires. That was the end of Yahya [AS]. As the scholars says: “He passed away in the age of thirty and Zakariya [AS] passed away at the age of hundred and thirty”.

Allah SWT has given sayyidina Yahya [AS] a very very interesting blessing. Allah SWT says: “And peace be on him the day he was born and the day he dies and the day he will be raised up again”. [Quran Chapter: 19. Verse: 15].

Who’s around?
Eesa [AS].
Eesa [AS] that time was thirty years old.
